Trade Cards; This is a lovely old promotional blotter (for use with pen and ink) or trading card for Chadwick's Spool Cotton. This blotter measures (4.75 x 3.1 inches) 12 x 8 cm. Front is full-color in subdued tones, two little children bundled up in fur coats, hoods and mufflers in wintery landscape. Rear is imprinted in blue and shows a spool of thread and advertising slogans in typical 19th century ornate lettering (see scan); Text on rear: 'Chadwick's Six Cord Cotton is the Best, White, Black & Colors, for Hand and Machine.' Printed by 'Schumacher & Ettlinger, New York.' No date but we estimate 1870; we acquired these in a lot of items from 1860s-1870s; the printing firm dates from 1866. Company logo, shown on both sides, is heraldic crest with torse, demi-lion rampant, crowned and collared, holding pierced lozenge. ; We have two of this item and will ship the best one f*rst. The best one is crisp and clean with just a hint of sunning to one edge. The second is nearly as good but the sunned edge has a few very tiny chips. No ink blots, no major defects. Quite scarce in any condition.
