512 pages; 8vo (9") 23 cm; This is an actual book from 1865, not a flimsy computer-generated reprint. ; Hardcover, brown cloth, gilt title on spine, pale pink endpapers, 19 b/w illustrations including frontispiece portrait engraving of author. ; Civil War experiences of correspondent for NY Daily Tribune who traveled into South 1861 to ascertain whether rebellion 'sprang from the people or not' and remained in Confederacy reporting on war until captured as spy 1863, made daring escape 1864. Book includes rousing 'Song for the Nameless Heroine' with tune, piano score and lyrics, by B. R. Hanby, in honor of Melvina Stevens, who helped author and others escape. ; We have graded this item Poor. Exterior worn and not pretty. Both hinges broken, boards hanging by threads. Both free endpapers missing. Many pages have old soot marks. Backstrip almost completely shot yet gilt readable. All pages attached and readable. Sold as is.
