Hardcover, dark brown cloth, gilt title on spine, 420 pages, pale pink endpapers, b/w portrait frontispiece engraving of Ballou, footnotes throughout. ; The Rev. Hosea Ballou (1771-1852) was one of the most important Universalist preachers in US history. He was vice president of the Universalist Church of America 13 years and president 13 years. His book, A Treatise on Atonement, 1805, was the first publican to establish a complete Universalist theology and it also set forth a unitarian view of Jesus. The Rev. Thomas Whittemore, brother-in-law of Ballou, was a longtime Universalist newspaper editor and powerhouse champion of liberal religion. ; We have graded this item Fair.
