436 pages; 8vo (8.75") 22 cm; Hardcover, two-toned gray cloth, [xx] + 436 pages, beige endpapers, index, bibliography, endnotes, b/w frontispiece portrait of Very on glossy plate. ; Jones Very (1813-1880) was a well-known poet, mystic and Transcendentalist of mid-19th century America. He was a Unitarian, briefly a minister, and taught Greek at Harvard. In 1840 his literary career came to a screeching halt when he announced he was the Second Coming of Christ. ; Book shows no sign of wear, but 44 pages near front have underlining and/or brief margin notes in a small hand, by former owner, a Unitarian Universalist minister. Otherwise no defects to book. Jacket clipped, bottom edge has small chips, but everything is readable.
