657 pages; 12mo (7.75") 20 cm; Hardcover, brown cloth, black decor, gilt title on spine, 657 pages. ; Mrs. Humphrey Ward (1851-1920) was one of the most popular novelists of the late 19th century. This, her most famous novel, originally published 1888, was loosely based on life of radical Unitarian minister Moncure Daniel Conway. Mrs. Ward herself was also Unitarian but a staunch opponent of woman suffrage. This novel was an enormous bestseller in its day and controversy swirled around it for years. ; Cloth shows light edgewear mainly at heel and crown. No marks. Spine slightly misshapen but intact, hinges tight. No jacket, as issued.
