This, her most famous novel, originally published 1888, was loosely based on life of radical Unitarian minister Moncure Daniel Conway. Mrs. Ward herself was also Unitarian but a staunch opponent of woman suffrage. This novel was an enormous bestseller in its day and controversy swirled around it for years. ; Cloth shows light edgewear mainly at heel and crown. No marks. Spine slightly misshapen but intact, hinges tight. No jacket, as issued.
