351 pages; 8vo (8.75") 23 cm; Hardcover, dark red cloth, gilt lettering, top edge gilt, illustration on front in white and gilt of armored Cupid-like figure with tilting lance skewering crown, laurel and heart; similar character in gilt on spine; 351 pages, index, bibliography, footnotes, 39 b/w portraits and illustrations on glossy plates, with captions. ; Originally published 1909 by London: T. Fisher Unwin. This is 1st US edition, 1910. Detailed and well-written biography of the Marshal (supreme general) of France 1743-1750 who provided the French crown with many decisive victories in the War of Austrian Succession. ; Minor exterior wear, mainly to white part of front panel, which shows some rubbing. Light foxing here and there, mainly to plates and adjacent leaves. No marks, no major defects. Binding tight.
