This edition 1912. A superb collection of old folksongs and more recent (mid to late 1800s) popular songs by Scottish composers on Scottish themes. (Morven or Morvern is a craggy remote peninsula in western Scotland); Edges of boards worn and chipped. Front endpaper has an old song lyric taped in and several names penned in a small hand. Interior clean, binding tight.

Some were printed on the pages, as published; some are pasted in from old clippings; but most are written on blank pages in fountain pen in a very neat hand. ; Some of the handwritten recipes are: Tomato marmalade. Tangy tartar sauce. Mrs Scribner's Texas hash. Apples a la Vernor. Wassail serves 40. Vanilla caramels. Peanut brittle. Filipina roll. Chocolate joy icing. Ginger ale jelly. Maude's brown bread. Oysters wrapped in bacon. Salad boquet 8 servings. Golden glow salad. Irene Pavloska's waffles. Cold water cake. Bread and butter pickles. Many more. ; We acquired this item in 2013 from the living estate sale of an elderly lady in Detroit, who said it was her mother's. There is no date but we estimate 1925. ; Condition: Worn but intact. Some pages show edgewear and discoloration from paste, but everything is readable. Binding is tight. Quite rare and certainly unique. Sold as is.

Owner name (J. D. Slaughenhaupt, Smithsburg, Md) penciled on front endpaper in an old hand. Oldprice inked on same. A few pages have brackets penciled in margins. Light foxing here and there. James Monroe Cook (1818-1850) was well known in upstate New York as a fierce debater in defense of Universalism and was founding editor of the Western Luminary, a Universalist paper. This excellent memoir was written by his brother, also a Universalist minister. ; Very little wear. A touch of foxing to a few pages at front and rear. Gift note 'Elizabeth Simmons Nov 24 1855 Victor NY to Isabel A. Stone' penned in a very delicate hand on front endpaper. No other marks. Quite scarce in any condition. ; Items laid in: 1) very old clipping of memorial poem by Mary Frances Tyler. 2) very old calling card of Mrs. Daniel W. Fish of Staten Island.

Sullivan stamped in lower corner in purple ink. Front cover has 'Musical Director J. K. Blackwell' stamped in gilt. The same individual signed front free endpaper in pencil. (J. K. Blackwell was indeed a musical director for D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in early 1900s) All pages turn. Everything readable. Binding tight. Sold as is.

He was a Unitarian, briefly a minister, and taught Greek at Harvard. In 1840 his literary career came to a screeching halt when he announced he was the Second Coming of Christ. ; Book shows no sign of wear, but 44 pages near front have underlining and/or brief margin notes in a small hand, by former owner, a Unitarian Universalist minister. Otherwise no defects to book. Jacket clipped, bottom edge has small chips, but everything is readable.
