865 pages; 8vo (8.25") 21 cm; Brown textured leatherette boards, gold spine lettering, [xvi] + 865 pages, several b/w illustrations, 2 indexes, glossary of medical terms. Bulk of the text concerns recipes (here called receipts) for all manner of pioneer foods, plus many for preparations such as cleaners, fertilizers, and fabric dyes. Another section discusses home remedies, nursing, midwifery, etc. There are also sections of agricultural, mechanical, and beekeeping tips. ; Memorial Edition stated, with brief bio of author by the Rev. Lorenzo Davis of Ann Arbor. ; Copyright 1886. This edition 1889. This is an actual book from 1889, not a facsimile reprint or print-on-demand fake. ; Complete title is a mile long, as was customary in the days before publishers put all advertising on jacket. ; Book shows no major defects, except that binding does not appear to be original, but perhaps from 1930s. A touch of foxing to front 3 leaves. Pages are yellowed from age but not brittle. No marks. Binding is tight.

Written by Arthur W. Knapp, MSc, FIC. Not a recipe book; a history of the cocoa industry from cacao trees to chocolate drinks and confections. ; Cloth is rubbed at extremities, frayed at heel and crown. Bookplate on front endpaper from Library of Hiram Walker & Sons, Inc, Research Department, with W logo. 12 pages have underlining or margin marks in red pencil, all in a light hand. Gilt lettering on front is a bit dull but all readable, on spine is heavily rubbed and mostly gone. Binding tight. Rare. Sold as is. (Please note: Image shows front cover, title page, frontispiece)

Vol-1 describes early settlers, townships, villages, churches, militia, agriculture, schools, etc. Chapter on Women's Christian Temperance Union by Mrs. E. T. Rork. Chapter on great fire by Gerrit van Schelven. Chapter on City of Holland by G. A. Mitchell. Chapter on Holland churches by Rev. Henry E. Dosker. Vol-2 is an exhaustive listing of every business and every permanent male resident, with dozens of local display ads, and 4-pg table of all ships built in Ottawa county with their name, class, tonnage, builder, owner, etc. ; Amazonbuyers please note: This is an actual hardcover book from 1892, not a flimsy computer-generated reprint. ; Tips worn. Light wear to heel and crown. Small spot to fore-edge. One leaf (preface) has a hole trimmed out of inner margin, not affecting any text. A few pages show light to moderate foxing otherwise interior is clean and bright. Binding tight. Quite scarce in any condition.
